Error 24: Too Many Files Open

One of our clients purchased linux dedicated server using MySQL 4.1 and reported us the following error message:
Can't open file: ... (errno: 24), from MySQL , it means that one has not allocated enough file descriptors for the MySQL server. One can use the perror utility to get a description of what the error number means:
root@server> perror 24
OS error code 24: Too many open files
The problem here is that mysqld is trying to keep open too many files simultaneously. One can either tell mysqld not to open so many files at once or increase the number of file descriptors available to mysqld.
To increase the limit to open files, server administrator needs to edit mysql configuration file which is generally located at /etc/my.cnf and enter the below mentioned line in [mysqld] section.
Open-files = 2048 (Where 2048 is the number of files one can allow MySQL to open)
